I have gained wisdom during my many years living in the Navajo Nation. Also, I have suffered the Long Walk and the misery at Bosque Redondo. Our return home was joyous. “The collective trauma of the Long Walk…is critical to contemporary Navajo’s sense of identity as a people.”

Blessed Rain
The remote areas of the Navajo reservation can have long periods of no rain. Without rain the sheep pastures can dry up. The rain is needed to provide nourishment for the sheep and survival for the sheep herder. When the blessed rain comes, life is reassured. Late in the afternoon he watches a thunderstorm
approaching from the west.

Hollow Horn Bear
This young man was named after a famous Brule Lakota chief who was born in March,1850 and died on March 15, 1913. His namesake fought in many of the battles of the Sioux Wars, including the Battle of the Little Big Horn.

I just love when I perform my Grass Dance at the big Pow Wow at the Crow Fair. My attire flows as I dance to prepare the arena, tramping down the grass to enable everyone else to dance.

I had practiced my dance many times with my family to prepare for the big Pow Wow. That security with my family immediately vanished when I first joined the many Pow Wow dancers in a swirling chaos for my first dance. But I did fine.

Stealing Horses
The hardscrabble desperados have stolen horses in Canada and are driving them south into Montana for sale to customers who would not require a bill of sale. After selling the horses the desperados will rustle cattle in Montana and drive them north into Canada to sell.
